News this month has not been happy.  Three old friends have passed on to the Lord.  We never know the day or time for sure.  In fact today is the memorial for one of them.  My high school love, Wayne "Smokey" Erven.  It saddens my heart to hear that he didn't make it to his 90s as he hoped.  When I saw him in May he looked good and had high hopes of the future.  We exchanged our ailments and both of us thought we were doing OK.  Funny how when you are growing older you talk about such things.  It was a happy visit.  I was fortunate to meet Elaine, his wife of 51 years.  She was such a positive person and full of joy with a cute sparkle in her eye.  She let me sit in the front seat as she joined by daughter in the back seat on our way to see the ships that Wayne so loved and spent his time on during his service in the Navy.  He told me of his Vietnam days over our dinner at an authentic Chinese restaurant in Alameda China town. and the aftermath when he retired and tried to get a job as a civilian.  How times were not always easy even in the Navy, when he wanted to be stationed close to the home he bought for his family but the Navy decided differently and they rented out the home and moved for a few years to his new assignment.   Why is it that sometimes the logical doesn't happen and we have to sacrifice?  Guess it makes us stronger people to take the bad with the good.  Both he and Elaine had wonderful stories of their children and their pride in their family.

The other two people who died were husband and wife, married 50 years, too.  The wife, Karen died first followed two months later by her husband, Harold.  We met in the 70s in San Jose when we bought houses on the same block and our kids played together.  We couples made friends and continued our friendship over the years of separation to different areas.  They went to Bakersfield and we to Nevada with a 15 year return to Bay Area and then back to Nevada.  We would meet occasionally when we traveled either to Bakersfield or they came to Nevada.  It was always a joy to reconnect.  Our last good visit was in 2008.  Broke my heart to hear of their passing.

In recent years we have lost many good and loyal friends and as a memorial to their memories I am posting pictures of these people I loved and cared for.

August 10th - 56 years later

Today August 10th is another memorable  day for me.  It is the day my first born, Sara Elizabeth was born. 56 years ago.  What a day it was.  I remember I was going to go to Mass that morning because it was Sunday.  My husband advised me against going.  He was home on leave from the Marines to experience the birth of his baby, too.  His time was almost up as I had passed the due date the doctors gave me.  I really wanted to go to church that day and was upset that he wouldn't bring me so I went back to bed.  It wasn't long after that when I decided to change positions and my water broke.  If I had gone to Mass, it would have happened at 8:10 a.m. and I am sure I would have caused a commotion. So glad that sometimes others have more sense than I do.   Even though I get stubborn and ornrey, I soon get over it.   Luckily, we were at my mother's home and she knew what to do.  We headed to Oak Knoll hospital in Oakland to deliver our baby.    Since my baby was breach (which was discovered on my last visit when X-Rays were taken by a new young doctor) , the birthing process would take a lot longer than most.  During the day, five doctors came to see me and my situation.  They looked at the X-Rays and decided my frame could handle the delivery.  I didn't deliver my precious baby girl until 11:58 p.m.   I remember lying on a table with my legs stretch out  length wise in straps, not the usual bent position while the two doctors attending me in the delivery room played cards and made bets about the birth and how big the baby would be.  Today I would have had a Caesarian section  because she was so long she couldn't turn and she came out butt first.  Quite an experience for a first time mother.  I have to say the experience was less than pleasant as some of the nurses were quite cruel in their demeanor and words.  I was treated with no mercy.  When the day came to go home, I was extremely happy.  The only good thing about it was the cost.  I think it was a whooping $5 some odd cents.  But believe me I paid my dues during the ordeal.  But as they say, you forget all of the distress when the baby is handed to you and you get to nuture the new bundle of joy.  She was precious, loved and cared for.

Today is special.  It is my daughter, Keri's 50th birthday.  It is special to me because I received a blessing the day she was born.  Happy Birthday, dear daughter.  Just the beginning of the Golden years for you.

Today is August 1st, the beginning of a new month.  I am celebrating it by going to Lake Tahoe to see my daughter, Keri, her hubby, Eric, son, Chris and his chidren, Nick, Porter and Ann-Marie.  Ron is staying home where he is comfortable.  They have rented a house on the Lake and brought their boat up for fishing excursions and fun.  We will be celebrating Keri's 50th birthday, too.   She is now eligible for AARP.  And yes, I am getting older each year, too.  I realize it more and more as my children progress into middle age.

Made it to the Tahoe Keys and the family visit.  The patio overlooks the bay where the boats can dock right off the home's ramp.  You see the boats traveling back and forth going to and from Lake Tahoe.  The kids had fun fishing and kept a line in the water just in case.  There was also a crawdaddy trap off the ramp that they kept an eye on, too.  Got to see little Ruby and she is jabbering up a storm and speaking her mind alot.  So funny.  Oh, and she is walking all over the place, too.  Watch out family here come trouble ahead.  LOL

The visit was great.  Keri loved the present we got her.  The dinner of pork roast with special sauces BBQ'd was delicious.  All in all a fun time and great visit.  It was a great place and so convenient for the boating aspect.  Know they will continue to enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Yesterday, the Grocery Outlet had their opening in the spot where Scolari's used to be.  It is a grand day for our town with new businesses opening and serving the community.  In October, a new Bealls is moving in next door to the outlet.

Of course I had to go see the new store and purchased a few things.  Was surprised at how low the cost was.  I will be going back for sure.
